European University Cyprus in collaboration with Cyprus University of Technology started new research on situation awareness during driving and new Smart Driver Assistive Technologies (SDTA). Therefore, they needed a custom driving simulator in order to test and evaluate the proposed SDTAs in a virtual environment. The driving simulator should be developed from scratch to allow for maximum flexibility and customization during the experiments.
I found the topic and the challenge of creating something like this intriguing, therefore I applied and joined the project as part of my Computer Science bachelor thesis. The driving simulator was developed from scratch in Unity, and its major components are the car controller, the road traffic system, complex autonomous vehicle agents and the simulated SDTAs. The simulator was developed to be run in a CAVE VR room.
